How this protein intake calculator works
This page is a daily protein intake calculator. You enter body weight and a goal; the tool multiplies weight in kilograms by a protein factor (grams of protein per kg) drawn from common public ranges. You get a low–high band in grams per day, a midpoint, and an optional per-meal split. It does not replace medical or dietitian advice.
Inputs
- Units — pounds or kilograms.
- Body weight — scale weight used for the math.
- Goal — sedentary/RDA-style, active, muscle-focused, or weight-loss muscle protection.
- Meals per day — only used to divide the mid target into a simple per-meal gram guide.
Multipliers used (g protein per kg body weight)
- General / sedentary: about 0.8 – 1.0 g/kg (RDA-style floor for healthy adults is often cited near 0.8 g/kg).
- Active: about 1.2 – 1.6 g/kg.
- Build or keep muscle: about 1.6 – 2.2 g/kg.
- Weight loss / protect muscle: about 1.6 – 2.4 g/kg (higher end often discussed when calories are reduced).
Weight in lb is converted as kg = lb × 0.453592. Daily grams ≈ kg × multiplier. The hero number is the midpoint of the selected range; low and high ends are shown beside it.
Reading the results
Suggested daily protein is the mid-range target in grams. Low / high end show the band for your goal. Per meal is mid target ÷ meals (a planning aid, not a requirement that every meal be equal). Per lb is an approximate conversion of the mid target for people who think in pounds.
How to use the tool in practice
- Pick units and enter current body weight.
- Choose the goal that best matches your current phase.
- Set meals if you want a per-meal split.
- Click Calculate Protein and note the gram range.
- Adjust food choices or shakes to land near the band across the day.
Recalculate after meaningful weight change. Higher targets are harder to hit from food alone if appetite is low—distribution across meals usually helps more than one huge serving.
What this calculator does not do
It does not diagnose deficiency, set medical renal diets, or account for every sport, age, or clinical condition. Pregnancy, kidney disease, and older adults often need individualized plans. For deeper context on why targets differ and how many grams of protein per day make sense for women, weight loss, or training, use the Blog badge — that guide is separate from this tool page.
