How this USA tariff calculator works
This page is a practical import duty calculator for U.S. entries. You provide an HTS code, country of origin, customs value, transport mode, and quantity. The tool calls a live tariff API and displays estimated duty, Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF), Harbor Maintenance Fee (HMF when applicable), and a simple landed-cost total.
What you enter
- HTS code — preferably 8–10 digits (periods optional). Wrong classification = wrong duty.
- Country of origin — drives which additional measures the data source may stack.
- Customs value (USD) — dutiable value used for ad valorem math and fees.
- Transport mode — ocean may include HMF; air/truck/rail typically do not.
- Quantity — passed through when the API expects unit counts.
What the results mean
- Applicable rate / total duty — combined duty amount returned by the API after base and additional components.
- MPF — CBP merchandise processing fee estimate.
- HMF — harbor maintenance fee estimate (vessel/ocean oriented).
- Landed cost — value + duty + MPF + HMF (freight/insurance not included unless you add them yourself).
- Component list — line items when the API returns a tariff breakdown.
How to run a calculation
- Paste your best HTS code.
- Select origin and enter shipment value in USD.
- Choose transport mode.
- Click Calculate Duty and wait for the live response.
- Read the duty and fee cards; expand the component list for stacking detail.
Limits (read before relying on a number)
This is not a binding CBP ruling. Antidumping/countervailing duties, quotas, excise, and some product-specific notes may be incomplete. Free Trade Agreement claims often need documentation your broker manages. Always verify classification and rates with a licensed customs broker and official sources such as the USITC HTS.
